Large Hadron Collider

The Large Hadron Collider is the world's largest particle accelerator. It straddles the border of France and Switzerland. The collider was in operation for about a week last September when a fault with the super-conducting magnets caused six tonnes of liquid helium to escape into the tunnel. When it is finally on-line again it will either reveal to physicists the secrets of the beginning of the Universe or create a miniature black hole that will destroy the Earth.
